Welcome to my first blog post! Becoming a wedding and portrait photographer isnt something you just fall into. Especially as a San Antonio photographer or Austin photographer. there is a saturated market for sure! Its something you choose to be, work hard to learn, constantly maintain and have to be realistic with yourself about your talents and business savvy. So why would I choose this?
There had been a growing seed of passion inside me that I had been trying to water for some time. I knew there is creativity inside of me but where to place it? After getting out of the Army of nearly 7 years of service, going to school again and never feeling a calling - I got tired of just doing. Nothing spoke to me until I was a bridesmaid at a friends wedding and can you guess what I couldnt keep my mind off of? The photographer. She wasnt doing anything to grab attention but watching her made something click. I realized then, that I had a lot of the skillset that it took to do what I love and grow with it.
Thus, Gillian Menzie Photography was born.
The name represents much more to me than just my name, it is my Grandfathers name (Menzie) and my father and mothers name. Legacy and family werent a priority for a long time until I had my daughter, then it became everything. I want to capture every moment but in such a way that it is remembered beautifully. I had been trying to tell myself to be a photographer for a while but didnt know it yet. I used to pose my daughter and do little photoshoots before this sunk in. The images are poorly done, but a memory is preserved and often shared on my Facebook and Instagram pages.
Looking back at my childhood, we had a lot of amazing memories. We were very poor but that didnt stop us from camping at the beach, going on hikes, sledding down sand dunes, sailing on Grandpas sailboat and we had many pictures. None were posed like you see now with family photography ... they were unscripted and unposed. When I look at them I am transported to an emotion, a time, a smell or sound. It is with this thought in mind that makes me desire to do more.
So here I am, serving Texas with portraits , boudoir, fall mini sessions, Christmas mini sessions and wedding photography.
